DUBLIN, March 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Microsoft has released an open source emulator that will let developers build and test apps for the HoloLens augmented reality headset without owning the physical device. The HoloLens can run on most UWP apps from the Windows Store as a 2D app, but Microsoft want developers to design apps specifically for HoloLens.
Augmented Reality permits the overlay of computer graphics on the real world. It includes scanning the physical real-world environment and enhancing/augmenting it by adding virtual computer-generated information. It is a market that is expected to grow at a rate of 88.5% by 2019. The release of this emulator suggests that Microsoft would like to develop software for the device before it is made widely available.
The emulator uses a Hyper-V virtual machine and will work with Visual Studio, according to reports. The developer moves a simulated HoloLens user with a keyboard, mouse or Xbox controller. The apps will then respond as if they were running on the HoloLens headset.
The HoloLens device is expected to be particularly popular in the mobile market. A report on mobile augmented reality projects growth at a rate of 96.52% between 2015 and 2019. The growing gaming market will be a key driver for the augmented reality technology. Another report on the overall AR market forecasts 79.6% growth, and states that with the interest of many established players, the augmented reality market is set to boost with inflow of capital and technology playing their respective roles.
