Rest for the Weary: Pain Relief for Diabetics with Painful Neuropathy
WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Way back in the 17th century, John Donne, English attorney, cleric and preeminent representative of the metaphysical poets, wrote: "Sleep is pain's easiest salve, as doth fulfill all offices of death, except to kill." Today, those words could especially resonate with the estimated three to five million U.S. men and women with Type 2 diabetes who suffer from Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN), as half of them report trouble falling or remaining asleep.
PDN is a manifestation of diabetic neuropathy, a common complication of diabetes that results from nerve damage due to high blood glucose (sugar) levels. PDN can bring about symptoms such as burning, stabbing and hypersensitivity in the feet, and can severely limit patients' daily functions.
Unfortunately, even when treated with pain medications, only one in four patients with PDN reports 50 percent relief. Furthermore, PDN is non-discriminatory, in that it lasts through the night. Given the difficulty these patients can already experience in their daily routines, what can be done to help relieve their pain while they sleep? And perhaps even provide daytime pain relief as well?
Fortunately, one innovative company understands the importance of Donne's sentiments, especially for PDN patients. That company is NeuroMetrix, Inc., a medical device company headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, focused on the neurological complications of diabetes. Its team, led by Chief Executive Officer Shai N. Gozani, M.D., Ph.D., has created the SENSUS™ Pain Management System, to help those who suffer from PDN find rapid, non-narcotic pain relief both while awake and during sleep—or "pain's easiest salve," as Donne would say.
As Dr. Gozani explains, "The sleep cycle is essential for the repair, rebuilding and recharging of the human body and its natural systems. For the millions who are afflicted with PDN, pain symptoms can actually worsen at nighttime, according to studies published in medical journals."
SENSUS is a lightweight, wearable transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device that provides fast-acting pain relief as a complement to pain medications. It's the first such device to receive 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use during sleep.
