ATLANTA, March 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- GlobalShop, the world's largest annual event for retail design and shopper marketing, has issued a call to action urging retailers to focus on the in-store pickup experience. While 94% of retail purchases still occur in-store, more consumers are turning to online and mobile devices to get information and place orders. In 2014, 64% of online purchases were picked up in-store, an increase from 4% in 2013. In response to this acute behavioral change, GlobalShop has opened the dialogue and put forth an initial wayfinding design for a universal icon to mark in-store pick-up areas.

In conjunction with Yunker Industries, the A.R.E., ISA and GlobalShop held an initial contest to vote on the direction of this universal in-store pick-up icon. Seven designs were put forth to the community of retailers, designers, and graphic artists to stimulate discussion. The most popular icon combined the @ of the Internet with retail's iconic shopping cart and can be seen here:
"With 64% of online purchases being picked up in-store, online and mobile shopping is no longer a threat but an opportunity," said Doug Hope, Vice President, Content, Emerald Expositions. "Right now, in the majority of retail environments, the in-store pickup area is an afterthought. Retailers must embrace clear ways to not only find these areas, but to combine the human touch with elements of efficiency."
The winning icon direction will be on display at GlobalShop, taking place March 24-26 in Las Vegas, NV, in the Yunker Industries retail environment, highlighted in the show's Path to Purchase Centerpiece. It will then be on display at the ISA International Sign Expo 2015, also at the Mandalay Bay, from April 9-11. GlobalShop, A.R.E., and ISA will gather comments at each show and from the graphic and experiential design communities for a final design, and is resolved to see its first retail adoption this summer.
