Reversing the Common Pattern, Hardcover Book Is Published After Paperback and e-books
MILFORD, Conn., Nov. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Sales of hardcover books have been falling as e-book sales have been growing -- but the hardcover is not dead yet. "Stories I'd tell My Children (but maybe not until they're adults)" was initially published as a paperback, and then in multiple e-book formats. Because of reader requests for a version for gift-giving, the book will be available on December 1, 2011 as a hardcover with a full-color dust jacket.
Published by Silver Sands Books, it includes more than 100 stories that span 55 years: pre-school, in school, and after the author had enough school. Some stories were written as delayed revenge against bad teachers, evil bosses and crazy clients. There are stories about weird relatives, weird food, women the author considered marrying -- and the woman he did marry.
"Stories" has been called "mostly pants-wetting funny, sometimes poignant and profound, and often bawdy." The Midwest Book Review awarded "Stories" five stars and said it is "a thoughtful and fun read; highly recommended." Reviewer Nicholas Santiago wrote, "This book is so funny that I nearly peed in my pants. My girlfriend didn't think it was funny, so I got a new girlfriend."
Bestselling author Michael N. Marcus is a first-year baby boomer who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, but some of his fans are teenagers, and some are nearly 90 years old.
In addition to laughter, the book provides an education. It can help women understand the male fascination with farts and breasts, and explains how Betty Friedan and Anthony Quinn made 1965 much sexier than 1964.
Other chapters explain the difference between New York and Connecticut mommies, the connection between Sigmund Freud and Groucho Marx, how baseball can be child abuse, what boys don't know about jockstraps and childbirth, how a platinum American Express card is just as good as a Medicaid card, the meaning of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," the disgusting secret ingredients in the world's greatest coleslaw and how the author conducted a test to determine if he attracted crazy women or drove women crazy.
The book has stories about a school science experiment that almost killed the author, shooting a burglar with a speargun (while the author was in his underwear), a heterosexual man's failed attempt at seducing a lesbian, one paranormal experience and two episodes of paranoid delusion. They're all funny.
Marcus's "literary gods" include Dave Barry, Jean Shepherd, Matt Groening, Tom Lehrer and Jack Douglas - and additional inspiration comes from Aristophanes and Bluto Blutarski.
Cover price for "Stories I'd tell My Children (but maybe not until they're adults)" is $22.95. The book is now being discounted to $16.85 at Amazon.com. It is also available from Barnes & Noble and other online and terrestrial booksellers. The ISBN is 978-0-9830572-4-6.
Note: Review copies are available from the publisher.
