Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Howard Square on Friday, June 7 Marked the Revitalization of the Route 1 Corridor
ELKRIDGE, Md., June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The new community of Howard Square in Elkridge, Maryland marked the next chapter of the Route 1 Corridor's thriving revitalization. Developed by Atapco Properties, the community will offer apartments by Atapco and the Dolben Companies and townhomes from Ryan Homes. H&H Rock Companies started the original concept for the Howard Square development, much of which is being built today.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, an official ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Friday, June 7 at 9:30am. Keynote speakers Ken Ulman, Howard County Executive, and Marsha McLaughlin, Howard County Director of Planning and Zoning, spoke in high praise of both the county's vision and the execution of community development standards by Howard Square developers Atapco Properties, the Dolben Companies, H&H Rock and Ryan Homes. A large crowd of visitors, both from the area and beyond, attended the event to welcome this extraordinary new community to Elkridge. Also in attendance were State Delegate Guy Guzzone, Councilman Calvin Ball, Atapco Properties President Kevin McAndrews, Howard County Department of Inspections Director Robert J. Frances, Howard County Deputy Director of Public Works Tom Butler, and officials from the Howard County Department of Housing and Community Development, Office of Law, Real Estate Services, and Licenses and Permits.
Howard Square will feature 408 spacious townhomes from Ryan Homes, a company that has become synonymous with the highest quality homes, great neighborhood design and unparalleled customer service. Ryan Homes at Howard Square will offer a variety of floorplans from the 16' Hepburn model townhome to the luxurious 20' Composer Series townhomes. Affordability and value stand as the hallmarks of Howard Square, one of the most successful communities in Howard County. This thoughtfully planned community of townhomes and apartments is located on what will be a new signalized corner of Route 1 and Montevideo Road in Howard County. Its close proximity to Route 1 and I-95 will allow residents to easily access the popular employment corridors in Baltimore, Washington and Columbia. An on-site parking garage and retail destinations located within the community will also offer residents the kind of convenience they desire right at home. Additionally, there are over seven acres of open space located throughout the community, including: two acres of forest with trails, a town square urban park, a chess park with chess tables, a tot-lot and picnic area with grills and tables. Howard Square is served by sought-after Howard County Schools. Major retail shopping destinations at the Columbia Gateway Shopping Center and the Columbia Mall are only minutes away.
Verde, the apartment component of Howard Square, will be Howard County's first new LEED Gold apartments. The apartment project has been registered with the US Green Building Council and is designed to a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Standard. As part of the design, the building will use 40% less water than comparable buildings and consume 40% less energy. Verde will also be equipped with a solar array that will provide approximately 13% of the building's total energy consumption.
Howard Square is developed by Atapco Properties, who in conjunction with the Dolben Companies is constructing 299 new apartments within the community. The apartment project is the first and only LEED Gold apartment project in Howard County and has been registered with the US Green Building Council. Atapco is a Baltimore-based, full-service development company that has been in the real estate business for over five decades and currently owns and operates properties in New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. For Atapco, sustainable development means developing and operating properties in environmentally and socially responsible ways that create shared long-term value and growth for all stakeholders. Atapco is committed to this concept and looks at each new project as an opportunity to incorporate integrated "green" approaches that can maximize both economic and environmental performance.
