Richard Bebee Appointed UDC Business School Dean
WASHINGTON, Jan. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Richard Bebee was confirmed by the Board of Trustees of the University of the District of Columbia as the new Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration. A seasoned academic leader, Dr. Bebee becomes the latest appointment in a series of high-level changes aimed at enhancing the performance of the only public university in the nation's capital.

"Dr. Bebee's keen management expertise and proven cultivation skills will help propel our state university to the next level," said President Allen L. Sessoms, who noted Dr. Bebee takes over at a critical time. The business school celebrates its 40 year anniversary while the university system itself celebrates a 160-year milestone in the growth of the District of Columbia.
Dr. Bebee is the second high-level appointment made in recent months as the university continues to evolve. Dr. Ken Bain was appointed provost and vice president of academic affairs last year (http://www.udc.edu/udc_communications/press/2011-08-01_Ken_Bain_Selected_New_UDC_Provost.htm), and two other deans of schools have been selected but not yet confirmed by the board of trustees.
"I'm very excited about this new position," Bebee said. "I was extremely impressed with the faculty, staff, community and students at UDC, and see an opportunity for the School to be more of a player in the region's economic development and educational system. I also want to make sure that the School becomes known for its culture of learning as it offers access and opportunities which our community members need and want."
"The challenge facing educators today is to teach students how to respond and lead for the next half century in an environment that is relatively obscure," Bebee said. "Perhaps the bigger challenge is to teach students to be life-long learners, rather than a storage battery of information on what is understood today."
At Ohio University, Bebee was instrumental in helping the campus identify it's mission, vision, and promise to students; expanding and creating new programs including supporting the use of technology in the learning process; achieving high enrollment gains; generating new resources including securing large donations, grants, and expanding other revenue sources; and, engaging in productive business and community relationships, providing community awareness and partnerships.
At Salisbury State, Bebee was instrumental in the creation of the Corporate/Academic Alliance, Perdue School Alumni Council, Business Resource Center and the Project Management Group. Under his guidance, the Perdue College of Business offered its first distance education and online courses, installed the state-of-the-art Information Systems Active Learning Computer Laboratory and created a student-managed investment fund and an Internationalization Plan that established educational relationships in France and Chile.
Earlier in his career, Bebee was an associate dean and professor of accounting at Old Dominion University. He also has been a professor of accounting at DePaul University and Miami University. In the private business sector, he has experience with Arthur Andersen & Co. and Deloitte & Touche, and was director of national continuing education for Grant Thornton, an international accounting and management consultant firm.
