Richard Wolf Medical Instruments Supports ENT Mission in Honduras
Global endoscopic equipment manufacturer donates critical ear, nose and throat tools to empower native doctors and improve access to treatment
VERNON HILLS, Ill., Oct. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Filling an empowerment gap, Richard Wolf Medical Instruments Corp. has partnered with a humanitarian team of top ENT doctors to donate endoscopic equipment to Hospital Escuela in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. The doctors will leave not only their training behind but also state-of-the-art technology in a country where access to ENT healthcare is sorely lacking.

The 1,800-bed hospital is home to the only ENT residency program in Honduras, a Central American country of 8 million people. A Richard Wolf sales representative in Ohio learned of the mission from Dr. Christopher Perry, co-founder of the Toledo Clinic ENT Sinus Center of Excellence. In Dr. Perry's philanthropic role for Global Health Outreach, he has led many short-term missions to Honduras to train doctors in ENT surgical techniques. Dr. Perry leaves for Honduras again on October 21, where his team of surgeons will serve as interim faculty to ENT residents at Hospital Escuela for one week.
"After my first trip, I saw the need for much better surgical equipment," Dr. Perry said. "There is no benefit to going down there and bringing fancy equipment and showing them how to use it, and then taking it back home. Wolf graciously stepped up to provide critical equipment – endoscopic instruments and scopes – to do endoscopic sinus surgery."
Wolf donated about $10,000 in equipment. Dr. Perry bought additional instrumentation to donate at a discount.
Wolf's donation takes the "teach a man to fish" proverb one step further, said Monica Sanders, Corporate Director of Marketing for Richard Wolf. "Together with Dr. Perry and Global Health Outreach, we're helping Honduran doctors establish a standard of care."
