Robert Shrum Installed as Warschaw Chair in Practical Politics at USC
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- During a ceremony held Sept. 17, 2014, at the University of Southern California, veteran political consultant Robert Shrum was installed as the inaugural Carmen H. and Louis Warschaw Chair in Practical Politics at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
The late Carmen Warschaw -- a political activist, philanthropist, USC alumna and USC Honorary Trustee -- established the chair to help cultivate civically minded students. A former member of the Democratic National Committee, Carmen helped to forge the California Democratic Party, and the careers of many of its leaders. At USC, she and her late husband Louis were instrumental in starting the Casden Institute for the Study of the Jewish Role in American Life and the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics.
"I'm honored to hold a chair that bears the Warschaw name," Shrum said.
During the event, Carmen and Louis' daughter Hope Warschaw said her mother believed an endowed chair would be a wonderful way to give back to the university and strengthen the political science department's curriculum in practical politics. "Bob embodies everything that my mother was looking for in a chair holder," she said.
Shrum's experience in politics spans more than four decades. In 2000, he was a senior adviser to Al Gore's presidential campaign, and to John Kerry's four years later. He was a consultant to Ehud Barak's campaign for prime minister of Israel in 1999; and to the British Labour Party in its 2001 and 2005 parliamentary campaigns. Shrum has navigated 30 winning campaigns for the U.S. Senate and eight winning campaigns for governors.
USC Provost Elizabeth Garrett offered the university's gratitude to the Warschaw family for providing the endowment.
"Carmen Warschaw's vision for the unique chair was to support a faculty member who would bridge the gap between political theory and student involvement in the democratic process," Garrett said during the event.
USC Dornsife Dean Steve Kay said that Shrum will unite the diverse efforts at USC Dornsife to imbue students with both the political theory and practical skills they need to enact real and lasting change.
"Bob is just the leader we need to complement all of our initiatives and transform our students into their generation's movers and shakers," Kay said.
