Scholarships Total More Than $2 Million Over 14 Year Program
SAN FRANCISCO, May 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC®) of the Bay Area Scholarship Program® today announced the names of the 200 students across the Greater Bay Area chosen as the recipients of its 2015 – 2016 college scholarships. Of the 200 recipients, 73 are past winners and have been granted the scholarship again to aid in continuing their education.
Through the support of local McDonald's® Bay Area restaurant owners, McDonald's customers and other regional business and community organizations, RMHC of the Bay Area has awarded $2 million in scholarships to more than 1,700 students since the program began in 2002. Scholarship recipients are invited to re-apply for the scholarship every year they are in college.
RMHC of the Bay Area and each winner's school will honor the educational achievements of the scholarship awardees during a ceremony at the South San Francisco Conference Center on May 26.
"Scholarships provide a much-needed opportunity to allow students to pursue their higher education dreams. Our program directly benefits those who not only have exceptional academic standings, but are in need of assistance due to financial barriers," said Wai-Ling Eng, McDonald's restaurant owner and chair of the RMHC Bay Area Scholarship Committee. "We are very excited to have Congressman Mike Honda in attendance at our event this year. As a former teacher and school principal, he understands the importance of education and how impactful this program is in our local community."
Every year, RMHC awards $1,000 scholarships to students who display academic achievement, leadership and community involvement. The goal of the program is to provide resources to exceptional students who need financial assistance to attend college.
Locally, RMHC of the Bay Area is dedicated to helping children and families around the Bay Area through its core programs, which include three Ronald McDonald Houses and two Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles. By providing stability and resources, RMHC of the Bay Area is building a brighter, more promising future for local children and their families.
