Ronald McDonald House Charities® of The Bay Area Awards More Than $200,000 In College Scholarships To Bay Area Students
Scholarships Total More Than $2 Million Over 15 Year Program
SAN FRANCISCO, May 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- RMHC® of the Bay Area today announced the names of the 205 students across the Greater Bay Area chosen as the recipients of its 2016 – 2017 RMHC Scholars program which awards scholarships for students to pursue college educations. Of the 205 recipients, 108 are past winners and have been granted the scholarship again to aid in continuing their education.
In addition, to recognize the community service of scholarship recipients, the Charity will present community organizations with $1,000 grants. RMHC Scholars worked with recipient organizations to help improve their community.
RMHC of the Bay Area has awarded over $2.2 million in scholarships to more than 1,900 students since the program began in 2002. Scholarship recipients are invited to re-apply for the scholarship every year they are in college. The funding for the scholarship program is provided by McDonald's® Bay Area restaurant owners, McDonald's customers and other regional business and community organizations.
RMHC of the Bay Area and each winner's school will honor the educational achievements of the scholarship awardees during a ceremony at the South San Francisco Conference Center on May 23.
"Scholarships provide an opportunity for students to pursue their dreams of a higher education. The RMHC Scholars program directly benefits those who not only have exceptional academic standings and a commitment to community service, but are in need of financial assistance," said Wai-Ling Eng, chair of the RMHC Bay Area Scholarship Committee and a McDonald's owner/operator. "The Charity is proud to expand our impact and celebrate the accomplishments of the students by providing grants to other non-profit organizations that provide much needed services to our community."
RMHC of the Bay Area's mission is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. In addition to the RMHC Scholars program, the Charity helps keep families close to each other and the care they need by supporting three Ronald McDonald Houses and two Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles that serve the greater Bay Area. RMHC programs in the Bay Area serve 4,048 children and their families each year.
