US demand for roofing underlays is forecast to rise 3.4 percent per year to 214.5 million squares in 2020, boosted by the anticipated increase in residential building construction spending. Strong growth in housing starts (particularly in the single-family housing segment) will spur the installation of underlays on homes with steep-slope roofs. The much larger residential reroofing segment will also contribute to growth as homeowners engage in previously delayed home improvement projects, such as the repair or replacement of older and worn roofing. Underlays are almost always installed during these projects to provide supplemental protection against leaks.

Synthetic Underlays to Overtake Asphaltic Products as Market Leader
Synthetic underlays are expected to experience more rapid gains in demand than asphaltic underlays through 2020, overtaking asphaltic products as the underlays most often installed in the US. Demand for synthetic roofing underlays will be spurred by their favorable performance properties, such as resistance to tears and moistures. The vast majority of synthetic underlays feature "self-healing" properties that minimize the incidence of leaks. Furthermore, many synthetic underlays have peel-and-stick backings and slip-resistant surfaces that reduce the time and expense of installation.
Asphaltic Products Will Continue to Play Important Role
Demand for asphaltic roofing underlays is forecast to decline slightly through 2020 in the face of competition from synthetic products seen as offering enhanced performance properties. However, asphaltic roofing underlay demand will be supported by increases in residential building construction spending. Many home builders and roofing contractors use asphaltic underlays because of their low cost, while other consumers -- especially in the commercial segment -- will select plastic-backed products that are compatible with metal roofing.
Reroofing Activity to Support Underlay Demand
The residential reroofing market will remain the leading application for roofing underlays. The nation's large number of older homes with roofs at or near the end of their expected product lifespans will support reroofing demand for underlays.
