LONDON, Feb. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Asphaltic products accounted for the larger share of demand in 2015, synthetic roofing underlays are expected to be the market leader in 2020, spurred by increasing contractor interest in these products because of their favorable performance properties, such as resistance to leaks and tears, and ease of installation. Overall demand for roofing underlays is forecast to rise 3.4 percent annually to 214.5 million squares in 2020.
Find out more about the market potential for roofing underlays in the US in Freedonia's new study.
The study addresses such questions as:
- Which market segments will see the fastest growth going forward?
- How will potential shortages of trained roofing professionals affect underlay demand?
- How will changes in building codes shape demand for roofing underlays?

Description
Rising Residential Building Construction Activity to Spur Demand
US demand for roofing underlays is forecast to rise 3.4 percent per year to 214.5 million squares in 2020, boosted by the anticipated increase in residential building construction spending. Strong growth in housing starts (particularly in the single-family housing segment) will spur the installation of underlays on homes with steep-slope roofs. The much larger residential reroofing segment will also contribute to growth as homeowners engage in previously delayed home improvement projects, such as the repair or replacement of older and worn roofing. Underlays are almost always installed during these projects to provide supplemental protection against leaks.
Key Findings in the Roofing Underlays Study
Synthetic Underlays to Overtake Asphaltic Products as Market Leader
Synthetic underlays are expected to experience more rapid gains in demand than asphaltic underlays through 2020, overtaking asphaltic products as the underlays most often installed in the US. Demand for synthetic roofing underlays will be spurred by their favorable performance properties, such as resistance to tears and moistures. The vast majority of synthetic underlays feature "self-healing" properties that minimize the incidence of leaks. Furthermore, many synthetic underlays have peel-and-stick backings and slip-resistant surfaces that reduce the time and expense of installation.
Asphaltic Products Will Continue to Play Important Role
Demand for asphaltic roofing underlays is forecast to decline slightly through 2020 in the face of competition from synthetic products seen as offering enhanced performance properties. However, asphaltic roofing underlay demand will be supported by increases in residential building construction spending. Many home builders and roofing contractors use asphaltic underlays because of their low cost, while other consumers -- especially in the commercial segment -- will select plastic-backed products that are compatible with metal roofing.
Reroofing Activity to Support Underlay Demand
The residential reroofing market will remain the leading application for roofing underlays. The nation's large number of older homes with roofs at or near the end of their expected product lifespans will support reroofing demand for underlays. In many cases, roofing contractors will also replace older or worn undelays, often with synthetic membranes that are easier to install and provide a high level of protection against leaks and tears.
Study Coverage
This Freedonia industry study analyzes the $1.2 billion US roofing underlay industry. It presents historical demand data (2005, 2010, and 2015) and forecasts (2020 and 2025) by product by product (asphaltic and synthetic), market (new and reroofing residential and commercial), and barrier property (water-resistant and waterproof). Asphaltic underlays are further discussed in terms of product type (#15 roofing felt, #30 roofing felt, and #40 roofing felt and other) and backing material (fiberglass, organic, and plastic), while synthetic underlays are discussed in terms of polymer (polypropylene and all other). The study also evaluates company market share and competitive analysis on industry competitors including Atlas Roofing, Carlisle Companies, CertainTeed, DuPont, Gardner-Gibson, GAF Materials, GCP Applied Technologies, IKO Group, Owens Corning, and Tarco.
