Of all airlines worldwide, Emirates, United and Lufthansa lead the pack offering Wi-Fi on long haul routes, by total number of ASMs
Last year, best Wi-Fi was available on 6% of flights. That number has since grown to 7.2% of in-flight Wi-Fi offered worldwide today, a number expected to increase significantly in 2017
In 2016, non-U.S. airlines committed to quality in-flight Wi-Fi at a rate that dramatically increased from prior years, while U.S. airlines wrapped up multiple installation programs, ensuring in-flight Wi-Fi is now commonplace on U.S. airlines and increasingly prevalent on non-U.S. airlines. There are now very few U.S. airlines with Wi-Fi installations still pending. U.S airlines now offer flyers at least a chance of Wi-Fi on 83% of ASMs, an increase of 8.7 percentage points from last year.
2016 was the year most major European and Asia-Pacific airlines set course to offer Wi-Fi
While Wi-Fi has become commonplace on U.S. airline flights, the same could previously not be said for flights operated by European and Asia-Pacific airlines. In 2016, however, multiple major global airlines signed large scale commitments to offer Wi-Fi on their aircraft. From British Airways to Eurowings to Qantas and Air New Zealand, Wi-Fi is going to be a reality in every corner of the globe.
"In-flight Wi-Fi continues to grow in both airline adoption and capability, and this trend is only going to continue in 2017. 2016 was the year that airlines outside the U.S. committed to high quality in-flight Wi-Fi at a rate only previously seen by U.S. carriers, and 2017 will see those commitments come to life" said Robert Albert, CEO of Routehappy. "70+ airlines currently offer Wi-Fi worldwide, which is quite extraordinary considering less than a decade ago it wasn't even possible. In-flight Wi-Fi is no longer just for early adopters — just look at the number of people on your next flight using Wi-Fi."
Routehappy Wi-Fi data covers all airlines offering Wi-Fi with expanded coverage
While airlines are still in the process of rolling Wi-Fi out to their fleets, Routehappy has scoured thousands of data points to determine the exact status of deployment. Routehappy's Wi-Fi data not only tracks which airlines offer in-flight Wi-Fi, but also its availability to consumers by chance, quality, coverage and cost, tracked by cabin, subfleet, airline, and flight. Routehappy indicates whether the connection/performance on all flights is Basic, Better or Best based on the underlying technology deployed. Subfleets that are not fully rolled out are provided as a chance of Wi-Fi. Additionally, Routehappy uses a sophisticated and proprietary algorithm to indicate whether a flight will have only partial or no Wi-Fi coverage on any particular route due to network or regulatory restrictions.
Deep domain expertise combined with unique industry relationships, a sophisticated data platform, and flight matching algorithms ensure that the data compiled by Routehappy is the most complete and accurate ever assembled to match product attributes to flights. Customers of Routehappy's Scores & Amenities API have full access to Wi-Fi data for every flight in the global flight schedule.
Routehappy powers merchandising content for flight shopping, helping airlines and distributors differentiate and better monetize their products. Routehappy's Scores & Amenities API provides flight scores and cabin amenity data, including aircraft, seat, layout, entertainment, Wi-Fi, power, fresh food and relative duration. Routehappy Hub is a cloud-based platform that helps airlines create, manage and distribute targeted product and ticket attribute content, in standardized formats UPA (Universal Product Attribute) and UTA (Universal Ticket Attribute) wherever flights are displayed.
