The one-hour tutorial will help nurses understand the risks associated with the unsafe handling of hazardous chemotherapy drugs, which are capable of causing serious effects to those exposed, including cancer, organ toxicity, fertility problems, genetic damage, and birth defects. This program will provide a summary of recent and historical evidence of healthcare worker exposure, identification of work practices that present a risk of exposure, and a description of interventions and technological advantages that may reduce exposure, such as ICU Medical's ChemoClave™ closed system transfer devices. With ChemoClave, nurses can eliminate needlestick injuries and reduce exposure to hazardous drugs during administration without changing standard protocols.
This presentation comes at time when regulation and guidelines for handling hazardous drugs exist, but exposures continue to occur. Nurses who handle these drugs may be exposed during accidental needlesticks, spills due to accidental disconnection of patient lines, or during drug spill cleanup. As a result, it is vital that nurses involved with any stage of the hazardous drug handling process be educated on the risks of exposure and know how to take recommended safety precautions.
Seth Eisenberg has nearly 30 years of experience in the field of oncology, including 25 years in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. As a member of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) he has served as Coordinator for the Chemotherapy Special Interest Group, Chair of the Special Interest Group Council, Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) Item Writer, and ONCC Test Development Committee member.
