Salient Federal Solutions Mentors VCU Team, Winners of the 2012 Excellence in Design Award

FAIRFAX, Va., June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Salient Federal Solutions, Inc. (Salient), a leading provider of information technology, engineering, and intelligence analytic services to agencies in the intelligence, defense, homeland security, and federal civilian markets, announced that the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) senior student project team mentored and supervised by Salient, was among the 2012 Excellence in Design Awards winners.

The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Engineering presented the Excellence in Design Awards during its recent 10th annual Senior Design Expo. Teams of engineering students shared their innovative research and design prototypes with industry and engineering leaders from the greater Richmond area. Projects from the biomedical, chemical and life sciences, mechanical and nuclear, electrical and computer engineering departments, and the computer science department were presented to more than 2,000 Expo visitors.

One of the two computer science teams mentored by Salient, was one of the top winners in the computer science category. The team developed a highly intuitive pensioner self-service web application portal with collaborative, social and mobile technologies.  

Senior Design projects and their presentations have been part of School of Engineering curricula and are a requirement for graduation. Salient proactively played an important role in mentoring the VCU computer science team over the lifetime of the project. This project included the building of a versatile portal using the Oracle WebCenter suite and introducing the Agile Scrum approach of iterative development. The VCU team focused on developing a high-end user experience that allowed for intuitive use of the portal by untrained users, incorporating collaboration features, and allowing for easy accessibility from various platforms including mobile devices.
