Salus Home Health Third Annual Skill Training - An Innovative Approach to Disaster Preparedness
IRVINE, Calif., March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Salus Home Health, an award-winning company at the forefront in providing coordinated home-based care services, is holding its third annual skills fair on April 2, 2015. Skill fairs are important components in the agency's ongoing effort to keep staff abreast of the latest innovations in home care and senior care and provide employees with valuable opportunities to learn, grow and hone their skills. Attendance is mandatory for all nurses and therapists, and more than 100 home health professionals are expected to attend.
In an effort to address the emergency preparedness needs of Orange County and the surrounding communities, Salus has invited a representative from disaster preparedness to attend this important event. "During Hurricane Katrina, the shortcomings of the emergency plans set in place were quickly realized," states Sharon Niederhouse, RN, VP of Home Health with Salus Homecare, "At that time, homecare workers were not recognized as first responders, and they were unable to enter disaster areas to provide necessary assistance for patients on their rosters. This left many of our most vulnerable citizens without services and support. Fortunately, state and national organization realized the serious concerns that these regulations posed, and changes were made. At this time, it is important that we continue to learn from past mistakes and evaluate and refine the homecare worker's plan of action should another natural disaster occur."
Mary Massey, BSN, MA, CHEP, PHN, Preparedness Program Manager, Orange County Healthcare Agency, concurs and further states "In the event of an earthquake or some other natural disaster, home health will be absolutely essential. We welcome the opportunity to reach out to this important group of professionals and contribute to this event."
The skills fair is arranged in a fun and informative way with classes addressing disease management, COPD, hospice and palliative care, wound care and the latest innovations in speech therapy. In addition to a representative from the disaster management department, Dean Chalois, President of the California Association for Health Care Services at Home, Sacramento division is also scheduled to speak. An exhibit hall providing staff with opportunities to view important durable medical equipment such as IV pumps, VenaPuncture and Wound Vacs will also be accessible throughout the event. There are opportunities for nurses to earn continued education units by attending, and everyone can enjoy a taco truck lunch.
