San Juan County is First in New Mexico to Join Nationwide Smart911 Network Citizens are Encouraged to Create a Safety Profile to Help 9-1-1 and Emergency Responders
SAN JUAN, N.M. and FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Jan. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- San Juan County Communications Authority announced today that San Juan County has become the first in the state to implement the national safety database, Smart911, in order to improve 9-1-1 services for citizens. Already being used in over 26 states across the country, Smart911 will allow citizens to create a Safety Profile of vital personal and household data, including household members, photos, medications or medical conditions and even pets, which will be displayed to 9-1-1 call takers immediately when a citizen places an emergency call. This Safety Profile provides much richer information than is currently available on incoming calls and can contain the specific details that first responders need in order to save lives.
"Having additional information at the time of an emergency is always a benefit to our call takers and response teams," said David Ripley, Director of San Juan County Communications Authority. "Smart911 allows us to not only enhance communication with our citizens, but it also assists us in locating them." According to the FCC, an average of 70% of calls to 9-1-1 are from mobile devices which have limited location information. Smart911 allows citizens to associate their mobile phones to home and work addresses and even specific family members which can assist with dispatching the appropriate response teams to the appropriate locations quickly.
Smart911 is a free service available to all citizens and is 100% private and secure. A Safety Profile can be created through the Smart911 website at www.Smart911.com. Smart911 has the added benefit of being a national safety database, giving citizens the ability to have their information "travel with them." While they may create their profile in their hometown, if they dial 9-1-1 anywhere in the country where the Smart911 service is active, their profile will be available to 9-1-1 call takers.
