RACINE, Wis., Nov. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- SC Johnson announced today that it continues to climb the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Top 100 list of the largest green power users. In 2015, SC Johnson moved up to No. 71, in recognition for using more than 73 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, enough to meet 43 percent of the organization's electricity use in the United States. According to the EPA, that's equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions captured by more than 41,000 acres of U.S. forests annually.
"We are honored to continue to earn this important recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency," said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President, Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability for SC Johnson. "Reducing our environmental footprint is not only a priority within the United States, but at all of our facilities around the world. From wind power to even co-generation powered by methane from a public closed landfill, we continue to make progress toward our aggressive sustainability goals."
SC Johnson is also among the top companies for on-site generation. At No.10, the Top 30 On-site Generation list represents those partners generating and consuming the most green power on-site within the Green Power Partnership. The combined on-site green power consumption of these organizations amounts to more than 945 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, which is equivalent to the electricity use of nearly 90,000 average American homes each year.
According to the EPA, green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. SC Johnson's holistic approach to sustainability includes reducing resource use through renewable energy and using innovative sources of green power, such as cogeneration and wind power.
SC Johnson uses two wind turbines at its largest manufacturing facility, Waxdale, in Mt. Pleasant, Wis. The turbines successfully cut nearly 6,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases in their first year of operation. Combined with the Waxdale facility's cogeneration systems already in place, the site, which is the size of 36 football fields, is now able to generate, on average, 100 percent of its electrical energy on-site. In addition to company-owned wind power at its Mt. Pleasant and the Netherlands manufacturing sites, SC Johnson purchases wind power at two other manufacturing locations, including one in Bay City, Mich.
Earlier this year, SC Johnson's manufacturing facility in Toluca, Mexico, received the Environmental Excellence Award from Mexico's Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection for the company's sustained effort toward environmental improvement. The Toluca factory gets 85 percent of its energy from wind power, has reduced landfill waste by 20 percent and cut water consumption by 16 percent.
Among many other examples of innovative renewable energy use, SC Johnson has a burner/boiler system that converts palm shells into a fuel source, and in Indonesia, the company converts waste husks from rice grains into a fuel source for heating water used in mosquito coil production.
The company also requires certain sustainability standards in its Supplier Code of Conduct. For more information on the company's sustainability efforts, visit http://www.scjohnson.com/en/commitment/overview.aspx
