RACINE, Wis., July 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SC Johnson was honored by 2degrees with a Sustainability Champion Award for its commitment to Long Term Energy & Carbon Management. The company was recognized for its Renewable Energy Project: SC Johnson Waxdale Facility at an awards ceremony on July 10. This recognition demonstrates the company's commitment to renewable energy usage.
"Being recognized by 2degrees for our commitment to energy and carbon management is such an honor," said Kelly M. Semrau, Chief Sustainability Officer. "As a family company, we believe in doing what's right for people and the planet, and using renewable energy in our operations around the globe is one way that we're living up to that commitment."
In 2013, the company commissioned two 415-foot wind turbines at its largest manufacturing facility, Waxdale, located in Mount Pleasant, Wis. The turbines will generate approximately eight million KWH of electricity per year; the equivalent of powering more than 700 homes annually. The turbines, combined with the site's two existing co-generation units, will result in Waxdale being able to produce an average of 100 percent of its electrical energy onsite.
These turbines demonstrate the company's long-standing commitment to renewable energy. SC Johnson is committed to a goal of increasing renewable energy use to 33 percent of total electricity by 2016. The Waxdale wind turbines are an important step in reaching this target.
The 2degrees Awards recognize individuals and teams behind the initiatives, best practices and pioneering sustainable business ideas that provide real value to organizations and to the 2degrees community. Winning companies are selected by peer votes.
