Second U-Haul Store Opens in Chicago Metro Town of Schererville

Jan 06, 2016, 10:24 ET from U-Haul

SCHERERVILLE, Ind., Jan. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The gracious residents and neighboring communities of Schererville have additional moving and storage options with the recent opening of a U-Haul store at 5048 W. 81st Ave.

U-Haul, through its adaptive reuse practices, has converted the property previously occupied by Schererville Storage into U-Haul Moving & Storage of Pine Island.

"We are conveniently located across the street from the Pine Island apartments, and that's been good for business as we are getting a lot of walk-ins," general manager Allison Thompson said. "We are important in Schererville because we understand every situation that could arise from a moving stand point and provide everything our clients need."

The 8.77-acre property showcases 11 single-story buildings and 40,141 square feet of space. Customers have access to 230 outdoor drive-up storage units, as well as U-Haul truck and trailer rentals, towing equipment, moving supplies, boxes, truck sales, and U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers.

This is the second U-Haul store to serve the town. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Schererville at 1861 U.S. Route 41 has been offering products and services from the industry leader in do-it-yourself moving and self-storage since 1985.

"Obtaining this second location in Schererville is a home run for U-Haul and the community," U-Haul Company of Northern Indiana & South Cook County president Craig Wilson said. "The location is considered the crossroads of Schererville because it is at an intersection that divides Schererville, Merrillville and Crown Point, allowing us to serve more families in Northwest Indiana."

The acquisition of the Schererville facility, which opened Aug. 13, was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
