Security startup Lightfactor® achieves FIDO® UAF 1st factor roaming authenticator certification for its flagship Qiwi™ device
WINCHESTER, Va., June 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Lightfactor, a security startup and FIDO Alliance member announced today it has successfully achieved FIDO Universal Authentication Framework (UAF) 1st factor roaming authenticator certification for its flagship Qiwi offering, an energy harvesting multi-factor authentication device. Qiwi provides a password-less experience as a FIDO UAF first-factor authenticator, but also supports the FIDO UAF and U2F second-factor protocols for use with traditional passwords. Lightfactor will initially provide support on the iOS platform, with Android and others to follow. Qiwi authenticators will be available for purchase later this year.
FIDO's UAF protocol allows for a password-less user experience. After an initial enrollment, credentials and keys are stored on Qiwi, not on the mobile device. The user simply plugs their Qiwi into the audio jack of their mobile device to automatically authenticate to the requesting application or web site. This hardware approach eliminates many of the risks and issues inherent in other mobile authentication solutions, including RF-based vulnerabilities. Qiwi's non-proprietary and ubiquitous audio jack connector allows it to operate on all current-generation iOS and Android phones and tablets. The audio jack connector also facilitates Qiwi's energy harvesting technology so it doesn't need a battery.
"Strong authentication without passwords is the future, and this is a revolutionary tool that addresses the needs of the enterprise and government while remaining cross-platform, low-cost and easy to use. We believe there are millions of users looking for a simple and inexpensive way to move away from passwords altogether, while being able to authenticate on a multitude of different devices very easily," said Jeff Cesnik, Founder and President of Lightfactor. "We knew Qiwi had to be interoperable with existing standards and felt FIDO certification was the best way to ensure that interoperability," said Dave Atherton, Co-Founder and Chief Software Architect.
