DALLAS, June 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Securus Technologies, a leading provider of civil and criminal justice technology solutions for public safety, investigation, corrections and monitoring announced that its unique patent licensing strategy has given it access to an additional 60 patents and technology from competitors in addition to its existing portfolio of 245 pending and issued patents.
"Since 1996, we have negotiated and executed 19 different patent license agreements with 17 different competitors – a group that represents over 95% of the revenue generated in the outbound inmate calling sector," said Richard A. ("Rick") Smith. "This list includes Globel Tel Link (GTL) twice, i.e.; they had two (2) agreements with us that spanned ten (10) years."
Most recently, the patent license agreements that Securus has negotiated contained these provisions:
- "Patent Peace" forever, i.e.; no future lawsuits;
- Full access to the Securus patent portfolio by our competitors and we get access to our competitor's patents as well;
- All future patents (pending and not yet filed) are covered, i.e.; embracing the notion of "Patent Peace" forever.
"With the above criteria that we have – both parties to the licensing agreement get benefit now – and forever," said Smith. "We file 20 to 30 additional patents per year routinely and extending that over the next decade gives the licensee another 200 to 300 patents that they and their customers get benefits and value from, for NO ADDITIONAL COST – and that is important. This works both ways," said Smith. "Securus also gets access to future developments of our competitors – so we both develop and we both benefit – and our customers benefit as well. All of this is true except for GTL, we attempted to bring them into the technology and patent sharing partnership, but they decided they did not want to participate – and took a costly litigation route with us. This is a shame – but it is their choice and they WILL NOT get the benefits of what we and others are developing for sure," Smith stated.
"We have approximately 250 product management and information technology development Associates at Securus that are potential inventors – so the big patent machine just keeps rolling along here. Do I mind letting others use what we have developed? Absolutely not – we have patent license agreements and that is what we promised and it keeps inmates, friends/family members, corrections, law enforcement and all of society safer. It is good for all of us," concluded Smith.
