- Christopher B. Carson is stepping aside after ten years as chair of the Business Tax Group to lead the Firm's strategic development and talent management efforts as its vice president of strategic planning, a position that will focus on long-term strategic growth and attorney development. Mark R. Stabile will now serve as the chair of the reorganized Business Services Group, in addition to retaining his role as executive vice president of the firm. Stabile will be supported by co-chairs Paul J. DeRosa, Michael D. Winterhalter and Jeffery D. Peters. Cohen & Grigsby's Business Services Group advises public and private clients in a wide range of industries and across the entire business development lifecycle, from start-up through strategic transactions, including regulatory and tax issues.
- Robert B. Cottington has been named chair of the Labor & Employment Group, which provides services for employers across the full spectrum of labor, employment and human resource law. A director in the firm, Cottington has more than 20 years of experience in representing public and private employers in collective bargaining, labor arbitrations, mediation, unfair labor practice proceedings and federal and state court litigation involving a wide array of employment law claims. The firm's former chair of the group, Robert F. Prorok will now serve as vice president and assistant general counsel for legal personnel.
- Bruce G. Gabler has been named chair of the newly organized Employee Benefits and ERISA practice. Gabler, a director in the firm, has more than 30 years of experience representing employers, administrators, plan fiduciaries, investment advisors and other service providers regarding various employee benefit issues and in matters arising under the Employment Retirement Income Security Act.
- William R. Taxay and Charles R. Brodbeck have been selected to co-chair the newly organized Real Estate, Affordable Housing & Public Finance Group. Taxay, a director in the firm, represents clients in connection with the acquisition, sale, development, leasing and financing of real estate and in real estate related-mergers and acquisitions. Brodbeck, also a director in the firm, has more than 37 years of experience. He devotes his practice to municipal and state finance with an emphasis on governmental, higher education, health care and tax-exempt financing. Brodbeck was named "Pittsburgh Public Finance Lawyer of the Year" for 2011 by Best Lawyers in America.
In addition to practice group leadership changes, the Firm also announced the following management appointments.
- Andrew T. Flowers has been named vice president of technology. In this role, Flowers will work with the Technology Committee to provide strategic direction to help manage technology assets for internal efficiency and client services. As a director in the firm, Flowers' principal areas of practice are negotiated mergers & acquisitions involving middle-market and technology companies; risk capital investments such as private equity, mezzanine debt and venture/angel capital financings; and counseling technology start-up companies in a general counsel role.
- Alice B. Mitinger has been appointed community services and pro bono program director. In this role, Mitinger will be responsible for leading Cohen & Grigsby's community service program, which offers the skills, resources and interests of the firm's lawyers to meet some of the most pressing needs in our local communities. The program includes pro bono and volunteer services. Mitinger is a director in the firm and has more than 20 years of experience. She specializes in land use litigation and development and appellate, regulatory, administrative and election law issues. She has appeared before municipal governing bodies and zoning hearing boards throughout western Pennsylvania and recently served a three-year term as a member of the Zoning Board of Adjustment for the City of Pittsburgh.
- Barbara A. Scheib has been re-appointed to her fifth term as chair of the firm's Recruiting Committee. Scheib is a director at the firm and represents businesses and individuals in a wide range of matters, including commercial contract disputes, trade secret and non-competition covenant cases, false advertising claims, and securities litigation. She has represented clients in the manufacturing, media, software, financial services and accounting industries in high-stakes litigation before state and federal courts and arbitration panels for more than a decade.
- Christie B. Tillapaugh will serve as the associate development director, and will assist the firm in identifying goals and priorities for the firm's associates. A director in the firm, Tillapaugh specializes in counseling public and private companies with respect to corporate matters, corporate governance, securities law compliance and merger and acquisitions. She is a member of the Business Services and Commercial Lending Groups.
