SEX IN CRISIS? Ed Young, Jr. Says Undervaluing of Intimacy Creates Rocky Marriages
CNN reports a new German study that suggests social media has become even more addictive than sex — and pastor Ed Young says this is bad news for the state of our marriages.
GRAPEVINE, Texas, Feb. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The concept of sexual addiction has been familiar to psychologists for decades, but new scientific evidence suggests that other forms of addiction are beginning to take its place. CNN reports a new study out of Germany, which suggests that an addiction to social media is quickly becoming one of the strongest and most difficult-to-break forms of addiction, and that it is wreaking havoc on our sex lives — including the sex lives of married couples. Indeed, the study's central finding is that the grip of Facebook and Twitter addiction is actually stronger than the desire for sex, alcohol, and even cigarettes. The study's findings confirm the teachings of minister Ed Young, Jr., whose latest book suggests that a healthy attitude toward sex is central for marital bliss.
A noteworthy pastor and national TV figure as well as a popular author, Ed Young writes in his latest volume, Sexperiment, that while there is "a lot more to marriage than just sex," a healthy understanding of intimacy does provide "a lot of benefits." The pastor says a great sex life gives married couples "a more intimate connection" and a stronger sense of purpose and purity. Ed Young's book suggests that when the desire for marital sex is overshadowed by lesser desires, the relationship suffers, a point that finds affirmation in CNN's study.
The German report cited by CNN makes it clear that the increased cultural addiction to Facebook and Twitter is not without its consequences. The study suggests that many marriages are experiencing dwindling interest in sexual intimacy, as the allure of checking social media accounts proves more overwhelming. And that, Ed Young affirms, is a major warning sign. In his book, Ed Young, Jr. points to marital intimacy as one of the most crucial building blocks of marital happiness.
So important is sex to a healthy marriage, Ed Young says, that increasing marital intimacy is an essential way to boost the relationship's happiness. The pastor encourages his readers to enjoy creative and passionate sex within their marriage, every day for a week. The book encourages readers by saying that taking this challenge will very likely provide positive effects within the marriage relationship.
