Sheller P.C. law firm investigates the link between ACTOS and bladder cancer; last week drug manufacturer Takeda offered $2.2B for lawsuits with 8,000 patients
PHILADELPHIA, April 6, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Sheller, P.C. law firm is investigating cancer in patients who took the Type 2 diabetes drug ACTOS. Takeda Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of ACTOS agreed last week to pay $2.2 billion dollars to injured patients to resolve claims of hiding cancer risks according to Bloomberg News.
"These individuals took ACTOS to help control their Type 2 diabetes but ended up contracting a much worse disease, bladder cancer," says Stephen A. Sheller, founding partner of Sheller, P.C.. The firm's attorneys represent patients across the country claiming harm from pharmaceutical products and medical devices.
ACTOS is designed to help control blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes.
The FDA released a drug safety update in June 2011 warning doctors and patients of the potential for bladder cancer, particularly in patients who've taken the drug for more than one year.
"Drug companies should be taken to task and held accountable for their actions," says Sheller. "This is especially true if company executives knew that the use of ACTOS could lead to an increased risk in developing bladder cancer but nevertheless failed to adequately warn both doctors and patients of that risk."
The symptoms of serious side effects from ACTOS include blood in the urine, painful and frequent urination or the urge to urinate, and stomach or back pain.
The FDA urges patients with any of these symptoms to consult their healthcare professional immediately.
