ALTON, Ill., April 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A federal judge has appointed Simmons Firm attorney David Miceli to the Plaintiff's Executive Committee in the pending national multidistrict litigation against Pfizer over its blockbuster cholesterol drug, Lipitor. Miceli and members of the committee will help spearhead the litigation on behalf of women who developed type 2 diabetes after taking the drug.

In February, the litigation was consolidated before the Hon. Richard M. Gergel in the U.S. District Court of South Carolina.
"It's a privilege to be selected to participate in such an important litigation," Miceli said. "Judge Gergel appointed an experienced team to lead the fight against Pfizer. I'm looking forward to getting to work and helping our clients obtain the justice they deserve."
In early 2012, the FDA required Pfizer to update Lipitor's label to include the increased risk of causing type 2 diabetes. Other manufacturers of cholesterol-lowering statins were also required to comply with the new guidelines.
The complaint alleges Pfizer did not conduct adequate studies or issue any warnings even though their internal data showed Lipitor placed women at an elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Miceli has extensive experience litigating matters involving dangerous drugs and medical devices. He has served on many multidistrict litigation cases including Trayslol and Bextra. In 2010, he served on the Plaintiff's Steering Committee in litigation involving the smoking cessation drug, Chantix, also manufactured by Pfizer.
The case is In re Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation (No. II) MDL 2502
