SingleMommie.com Releases Sobering Infographic Charting the Alarming State of Single Parenthood in America
Single parent households make up almost half of all United States families; of these, a startling number face poverty, homelessness, and a lack of education - what is their future and how can we help?
ORLANDO, Fla., May 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The face of the American family has been slowly changing for decades. There are more single-family homes today than ever before. Many of these families face overwhelming financial and economic obstacles. To most of us, this is no surprise.

According to Donny Gamble Jr., creator of SingleMommie.com, a resource designed to help single moms, "The issue here is not how to stop things from changing, but instead, how to raise awareness and provide quality solutions to those who are adding to the number of single family households on a daily basis."
According to a Single Parenthood Infographic, which is the culmination of several months of dedicated research conducted by Gamble and his staff, the statistics reveal the following:
Employment Does Not Equal Financial Security
75% of single mothers are employed with 66% of those being employed full time. Employment alone is not the problem. The real issue is the fact that over half of all single mothers earn less than $25,000 annually, which places the vast majority of them under poverty level ($15,000 a year or less for families with one child). The solution? Creating new jobs, making the commitment to employ single parents, encouraging them, and teaching them a new skill set.
Welfare, Food Stamps and Lack of Education
- Two out of every five single mothers are food insecure.
- 8 out of 10 homeless families are headed by single women with children.
- Two out of every five single mothers receive food stamps.
"It's hard to focus on getting off the system when you have such a large hole to dig yourself out of. 17% of single parents haven't even completed high school, so finding quality employment can be difficult," says Donny. "We need to provide help along the way, while these single moms are going back to school and utilizing the resources available to them. It's a process and it will take all of us. We're talking about the next generation of America here, so there should be an urgency."
Robin Bright, a single mom, and business owner who occasionally works with Gamble on projects, agrees, "I was on Food Stamps and government aid for a short period of time. My children were small and I remember constantly feeling overwhelmed. It was a step-by-step process that led me to owning my own business and I couldn't have done it without the help of my community. People gave us clothes and brought us groceries. Sometimes these people were complete strangers. I'm thankful for all of it."
How Can You Help?
Not content with merely providing the statistics, this helpful Infographic provides ways to help in every area. "Simply telling the story of single moms and reporting the statistics would be a dead end," explains Donny. "The information would be incomplete and pointless if we didn't provide a way for individuals to help. We decided to create an Infographic because of its potential reach on social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and especially Pinterest. If we can get the word out, along with clear instructions on where to give and how to help, we have a better chance of changing things for the next generation."
