Sky Electrical Adds Electric Cars to Their Fleet

Sky Electrical, the Twickenham-based electrical contractors, has added the Mercedes Benz Smart ForTwo Electric Drive (Smart ED) to their fleet. The fittingly electric-powered, eco-friendly vehicle will transport electricians across London to carry out electrical inspections, repairs and installations as well as to zip to any electrical emergencies. Not only kind to the environment, the compact Smart ED comes packed with benefits from which Sky Electrical can profit.

Fitting compactly in the rear of the vehicle, the Smart ED's lightweight electric motor uses magnetic force and the principle of electric permanent polarity change to generate kinetic energy. The motor in fact goes one step further by acting as a generator, converting part of the surplus energy from decelerating and braking into electrical energy, which then flows back into the battery. With an electronically limited top speed of 78 mph, the Smart ED accelerates from zero to 37 mph in 4.8 seconds, reaching 62 mph in 11.5 seconds, and can achieve a range of up to 90 miles. The Smart ED has the ability to transform any socket into a charging station and in just seven hours can take the battery from empty to full. It can even notify the driver by email when charging is complete! The innovative car connects to smartphones, tablets and PCs, from which journeys can be pre-planned taking the current vehicle range into account, and on entering a planned departure time, pre-entry climate controls can also be activated which will ensure the interior is kept cool in the summer and heated for winter. Moreover, driving on 100% electricity is not only easy on the environment, but also on your wallet.

The Smart ED consumes 15.1 or 14.4 kWh per 62 miles, depending on whether the battery is recharged at a domestic socket or a fast-charging Wallbox charger. In the UK, the price of electricity per kilowatt-hour is around 13 pence, making a 62 mile journey cost a little under £2.00. In comparison, the same journey in a similar sized car on diesel would cost around £7.40, and about £8.70 in petrol - thus making electricity a very cheap fuel to run on. What's more, the Smart ED is free from car tax and the Congestion Charge. And the benefits don't stop there.

Consisting of only a small number of components that display virtually no wear, the Smart ED's electric motor requires a lot less maintenance than a regular combustion engine; with no need to change the oil or to replace spark plugs, toothed belts or belt pulleys.
