Social Security Transition to Electronic Deposit is March 1
AARP Reminds Illinoisans to Help Relatives and Neighbors Make the Transition
CHICAGO, Feb. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With a March 1 deadline quickly approaching for all who receive Social Security (SSI) payments or veterans' benefits to convert from mail to electronic deposit, AARP is recommending Illinois families check in with elderly relatives or neighbors to help them make the transition.
"While more than 90 percent of Illinois' Social Security beneficiaries have already made the switch, it's important for those who still need to change to know that they will continue to receive their benefits until they switch," said AARP Illinois State Director Bob Gallo . "This is also a good time to check in with elderly relatives and neighbors and help them make the transition."
Switching from mail to direct deposit or debit card can be handled by any bank or credit union. It can also be done online, at www.godirect.org or by calling the Treasury Department, toll free, at 800-333-1795.
When considering a debit card, people should ask a few important questions: Find out about the fees for using the card, whether there's a good network of ATM machines nearby so they can get cash when they need it and whether a debit card is practical to help pay bills.
