Software Company Siftsort.com Provides Gas and Supplies to Hurricane Sandy Victims in New Jersey
CEO Darren Conte shares wisdom for surviving natural disasters
NEW YORK, Nov. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- After Hurricane Sandy ravaged the Northeast, many residents who had prepared for the storm bought a generator in anticipation of losing power. What most people didn't realize is that a gasoline shortage would put them in the same predicament as their neighbors who were not as proactive.
"Refineries were without power and couldn't dispense fuel onto trucks for distribution, leaving the New York and New Jersey area with few options for gas," says Siftsort.com CEO Darren Conte.
Siftsort.com's New York offices were unaffected by the storm, so the team immediately started coordinating gasoline and supply deliveries to families in New Jersey, where there seemed to be less gasoline in the initial days after the storm. "I would travel to Connecticut, buy 15-20 gallons of gas in containers then travel to New Jersey to provide it to families in need," says Conte. "They were happy to see me, to say the least," he says, and even posted photos @siftsort and www.facebook.com/siftsort.
With temperatures dropping into the 30's, some residents had to weather the elements while waiting for the power to come back on. "I met one person, who was lucky enough to find and buy a generator a week after the storm, then discover he couldn't buy gas to run it," says Conte. "He didn't know what to do or how to setup the generator, so he asked for help. I helped him unpack and setup it up, filled it with 5 gallons of fuel and taught him how to start it," Conte explains. "He used it to run two portable electric heaters," says Conte.
Most people do not realize the affects of a natural disaster. "If you are lucky enough to survive it, your troubles maybe just beginning," says Conte. "Downstream issues, like fuel shortage and power failures, will affect everyone," he explains.
The Siftsort.com CEO was the former Head of Crisis Management for the Securities Division at Goldman Sachs and has extensive experience with contingency planning. "People are realizing the process to file claims with their insurance company and FEMA – it requires paperwork to substantiate your claim," Conte says. "People are cold, hungry and stressed out, but have to rummage through destroyed houses looking for paperwork, it's daunting," he says. Siftsort.com can help you securely and quickly share your important documents by fax or email directly on their website, and best of all, it's free.
