Solomon, Saltsman & Jamieson: Mybossstinks.com Billboards are a Call to Action for Workers Seeking Help
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Recent Hollywood films and news headlines remind us that workers continue to be harassed and discriminated against by bad bosses, and that their unwanted comments and actions continue to be under-reported by their victims.
Many people go to work every day with cancer or other life threatening diseases, injuries either work-related or not, and their employer has a legal duty to make an effort to understand the disability and make reasonable accommodations based thereon that allow the employee to perform his or her job notwithstanding the disability. Yet many employers do not engage in this interactive process and provide reasonable accommodations to disabled employees.
Sexual harassment is also prevalent. According to an AOL Jobs Survey, one-in-six persons has been sexually harassed at their place of business. Out of those harassed, 43 percent say it was from a manager and 61 percent say it was from a peer. Only 35 percent of people harassed reported it; women (47 percent) are more likely to do so than men (21 percent).
"Sexual harassment and discrimination remains a serious problem," says attorney Bruce Evans. "Our clients come in with stories of employer misconduct that is sometimes shocking and clearly illegal."
In an effort to remind bosses and employees of their rights, Los Angeles Law Firm, Solomon, Saltsman & Jamieson, is reaching out with seventeen billboards located on the Westside. The billboard setting shows a man, presumably the boss, with a suggestive smirk towards a woman, who is tending to her work and bending over beside him. The message asks, "Boss taking advantage of you?"
Mr. Evans continues, "We want workers to know they have rights and legal recourse to stand up for themselves, so we created Mybossstinks.com as a resource for employees and a provocative ad to get people's attention. We are also hopeful it prompts bosses to do the right thing so we don't need to get involved."
Federal and State laws define sexual harassment as occurring when one employee makes continued, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, to another employee against his or her wishes.
Federal and State laws also define protections against discrimination based upon disabilities, sexual orientation, gender, age, race, ethnicity, and for being a whistle blower of illegal or unsafe actions or omissions by the employer.
