South Main Baptist Church Raises Human Trafficking Awareness with Faith & Freedom Week
HOUSTON, Sept. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Human trafficking is modern day slave trade and is considered to be the second largest criminal industry and fastest growing in the world. Human Trafficking is a violation of both human rights and freedom standards. Victims include young children, men and women who are subjected through a means of coercion, force or fraud and promises of a better life. Children with the highest risk of abduction are runaways or homeless.
Texas is a hub for both sex and labor trafficking due to its proximity to Mexico, its many interstate highways, international airports, bus stations, shipping commerce, and diverse culture. Of the many thoroughfares, the most prominent to human trafficking is the I-10 corridor. The Department of Justice designated the I-10 corridor as the number one route for human trafficking, which runs straight through America's fourth largest city, Houston, a major center for human trafficking.
South Main Baptist Church is proud to take a critical step into the fight against the travesty of human trafficking. South Main is partnered with Faith & Freedom Week through United Against Human Trafficking (Formerly Houston Rescue and Restore Coalition). South Main Baptist Church is hosting Faith & Freedom Midtown – Human Trafficking in Houston with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. The event includes Seminars from several speakers with firsthand experience of the horrors of human trafficking. Also, Van Tours identifying high risk areas will be held concurrently in the morning and early afternoon on Saturday, September 20 from 9AM to 3:30PM. South Main is excited for this opportunity to help educate the Houston community about the prominence and brutality of human trafficking in our city.
