Dozens of sessions explore the world of publishing

NEW YORK, March 11, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North America's premier gathering of freelance writers and nonfiction authors is offering special discounted rates for students who wish to take advantage of unprecedented access to the stars of the journalism world.

Students will be able to attend one or two full days of the 42nd Annual ASJA Writers Conference, which features dozens of educational sessions on the art and business of freelancing and book writing. A special series of beginner workshops will teach attendees how to make a living as a freelancer, pitch stories, write book proposals and find the perfect literary agent.

"The ASJA Writers Conference is an extraordinary opportunity for students to meet and hear from New York Times-bestselling authors, top publishers and agents, major magazine editors and hundreds of professional journalists," said Alexandra Owens , executive director of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. "The conference will educate and enlighten any student who dreams of working as a writer."

The conference, scheduled for April 25-27, 2013, in New York City, is a project of the ASJA Educational Foundation. The nonprofit ASJA is run by professional journalists and devoted to promoting the interests of independent writers. "Our purpose to help journalists survive and thrive," Owens said. "We accomplish our goal through education, advocacy and even legal action when necessary."

The first day of the conference, April 25, is reserved for ASJA members. The events on Friday, April 26, include a gala luncheon with featured keynote speaker and ASJA member A.J. Jacobs , Esquire editor-at-large and author of New York Times-bestselling books Drop Dead Healthy: One Man 's Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection, The Year of Living Biblically, and The Know-It-All.

The special beginner sessions are scheduled for April 27. Other Saturday panels will tackle a variety of other topics from reporting abroad to writing (and selling) biographies and memoirs.

Students may attend either April 26 or 27 for $125 or save $50 with a two-day package for $200. Hurry! These discounted rates go up on March 22.
