After the long, brutal winter that we have had, the magic of spring is upon us with the promise of new growth. This is the perfect opportunity to teach children the beauty of planting something and watching it grow. Kids love the satisfaction they get when they are able to see the cycle of life that they started. Gardening and planting gives children the chance to learn a very important life skill that often is not taught in school and it expands their relationship with the environment.
Author Tanille Edwards offers some tips for gardening with children and helping them understand how things grow from a scientific and fun perspective!
- Give them their own little container garden. Kids love having their own space. Allow them to take the responsibility for planting and caring for their special little garden.
- Provide children their own special tools. Put together a small garden bag for them with a mini hoe or spade and garden gloves. This will make them feel special and excited about gardening.
- Encourage them to take part in the whole process. They should help with the planting and nurturing of their garden, but they should also do the harvesting and preparation of what they grow.
- Start with seeds. It may seem easier and faster to buy starter plants, but kids will learn much more by actually seeing the entire cycle from seed to plant to fruit. You can start seeds indoors when it is still chilly outside and then transplant the plants when the weather warms up.
Jordan and Justine begin the adventure by helping their mother in her garden one Saturday morning planting pumpkin seeds. The brother and sister duo learn how seeds sprout into plants, the health benefits of pumpkins, the history of peanuts, how to research on the internet and then they use their magical powers to get an up close look at photosynthesis. Jordan and Justine's Weekend Adventures inspire children to learn about science, to love their families, to be confident and to use their imaginations! Learn more at www.jordangogreen.com
