18 Nov, 2015, 08:40 ET from St. George's University

TRUE BLUE, Grenada, Nov. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, St. George's University announced that its Master of Public Health program received accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health for seven more years -- the maximum re-accreditation term. The accreditation will empower SGU's Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine to continue educating leaders in the global health community.

"We applaud the efforts of the members and partners of our Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine for continuing to provide tremendous educational opportunities for all our students," said SGU Chancellor Charles R. Modica. "The Council on Education for Public Health holds its accredited institutions to the highest principles and values. This re-accreditation is a testament to the vision and leadership of the Department's Interim Chair Dr. Satesh Bidaisee and the hard work of our faculty and staff."

Established in 1999, the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has issued more than 700 Master of Public Health degrees.

This re-accreditation is only the latest distinction for the Department, which was named a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Environmental and Occupational Health, the first of its kind in the Caribbean, in 2012. It's also the only MPH program in the Caribbean that can induct public health workers and MPH graduates into Delta Omega, the world's oldest public health honor society.

"The Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has achieved much during its short existence, and we look forward to its continued service to the region in the coming years," said Dr. G. Richard Olds, SGU's new President and CEO. "The University's programs aim to help improve humanity's quality of life and enhance the global health initiatives that are so important in today's shrinking world."
