Stack Overflow Launches Developer Story to Give Programmers Greater Control Over their Career Path

NEW YORK, Oct. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Stack Overflow, the world's largest online community for programmers, launched Developer Story to give programmers greater control over their career path. This new feature is aimed at helping programmers and employers move beyond the traditional resume by giving developers the freedom to highlight the accomplishments most important to them and helping hiring managers think differently about how to evaluate and identify the best developer candidates.

Developer Story helps meet a critical developer need – the ability to illustrate their knowledge, their accomplishments and their learnings without the constraints of a traditional resume. Unlike a resume, no two Developer Stories will look the same. According to the 2016 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 56 percent of developers do not have a college degree in computer science or related fields, and in the outdated, traditional resume format, college education is prioritized over highlighting critical information like programming knowledge or showcasing a feature they built end to end. In traditional resumes, the list of new programming languages developers have learned or open source projects they have contributed to often get relegated to the same extracurricular section as hobbies or sports when it can be of pivotal importance to a hiring manager.

"Traditional resumes, with their emphasis on titles and pedigree, do a terrible job of conveying what a developer can do," said Stack Overflow VP Jay Hanlon. "Developers are makers. You wouldn't hire a designer based on static words on a page, so why hire a developer that way? The goal of Developer Story is to let developers share whatever it is that best conveys their skills, so we can match them with the companies that need them."

According the 2016 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, only 15 percent of developers are actively looking for a new job, but another 63 percent are open to opportunities. While Developer Story is a feature for developers on Stack Overflow to show who they are and what they've accomplished, Developer Story is also a huge benefit to recruiters and hiring managers who are looking to find the right talent for their openings.  Companies can now assess skills and knowledge in a more concrete and effective venue and approach developers with a better understanding of their offerings. Over time Developer Story can influence how companies tailor their search terms and language used in their job postings to mirror how developers discuss their own skill sets.
