Stanley Martin Homes - Emerging as an Industry Leader in Energy Efficiency
RESTON, Va., Feb. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In recent years, homebuilders decided to get with the program and "Go Green." The definitions of "going green," however, seemed to vary from builder to builder; some use Energy Star© appliances and low energy materials, others may alter their building processes to reduce waste and increase efficiency, and some do more. This sort of individualized approach to green building made it difficult for consumers to compare homebuilders with their competitors, as there did not appear to be an industry standard – that is, until The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index®. Serving as the sort of "energy report card" for new homes, the HERS index rates the overall performance of the home with regard to energy efficiency; the lower the score, the higher the efficiency.
According to the Residential Energy Savings Network (RESNET), the third party that administers HERS ratings, a standard new home (compliant with 2009 IRC code) is awarded a HERS rating of 80, while older homes (built to the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code) generally score 100+ ratings. Stanley Martin has set an internal benchmark to have their new homes earn a rating of 65 on the index. Said differently, a home with a HERS rating of 65 would be 15% more energy efficient than the average new home and at least 35% more energy efficient than the average older home. This means lower energy costs for homebuyers.
Stanley Martin is proud to announce that its three most recent homes to be rated scored the following on the HERS index; 57, 58, and 62 – all below the internally benchmarked score of 65. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that the 62 scored was for one of the biggest homes Stanley Martin Homes has built in recent years, boasting 6,543 finished square feet.
Beginning in 2012, every new community that Stanley Martin builds will subscribe to these energy efficient standards and every home will have a HERS rating, just as every car has a miles-per-gallon (MPG) rating, allowing consumers to easily compare the energy performance of Stanley Martin's homes to their competitors.
