State of Washington Certifies GenAcc Products as Best Available Control Technology
Certification issued for Quincy diesel generators for Vantage Data Centers
PEORIA, Ill., Nov. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- GenAcc Products, a supplier of EPA compliant emission reduction solutions for the power generation market, has announced that the Washington State Department of Ecology has certified its systems as Best Available Control Technology (BACT) for backup diesel generators at Vantage Data Centers in Quincy in central Washington.
In conducting its assessment, the state's ecology department found that the diesel generator systems with GenAcc's AirClarity 3000 "satisfied all requirements" and posed no significant health risk from diesel engine exhaust particulates (DEEP) to the Quincy area.
"The Department of Ecology's BACT certification of our technology is a confirmation of our systems' ability to considerably reduce DEEP emissions and create a healthy environment," said James Richmond, GenAcc chief executive officer. "Our systems are guaranteed to reduce emissions by as much as 95 percent."
BACT certifications are required for emission controls under the U.S. Clean Air Act for some operating permits.
Vantage Data Centers is building a data center supported by 17 3,000 kilowatt diesel-powered generators that will provide emergency backup power should an outage occur. Based on its analysis, "Ecology concludes that operation of the 17 generators will not have an adverse impact on local air quality," the department's report said.
Controlling emissions while operating a reliable backup system is a priority for Jim Trout, Vantage Data Centers president and chief executive officer: "Quincy is rapidly becoming a key global hub for data centers and Vantage is happy to lead in the development in Quincy of some of the world's most energy efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible data centers," Trout said.
Richmond noted that although backup engine usage is limited by regulation to a maximum of 100 hours annually, such systems have the propensity to emit from 2,000 to 4,000 pounds of pollutants a year.
"With the growing movement for green energy, emissions from backup systems cannot be overlooked despite their limited use, so our technology ensures that companies will be in compliance with state and federal EPA regulations while fulfilling their responsibility to maintain the healthiest environment possible," Richmond said. "That is why the BACT certification is so important."
