Statement By Kenneth Brancaccio, President Construction & General Building Laborers' Local 79 On the Port Authority Plan to Finance Its Capital Program
NEW YORK, Aug. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following statement was release today by Kenneth Brancaccio, president of Laborers' Local 79:
"On behalf of the 9,000 members of the Construction & General Laborers Local 79, I want to unequivocally add our support to the Port Authority's plan to finance and fund its capital projects.
Today hundreds of our members are working around the clock to restore the World Trade Center site to its rightful place as one of the premier financial and business centers of the world. Ten years after it was left in ruins, it is because of the Port Authority's leadership and determination that the site will once again be a thriving, vital part of our city.
For the next decade the Port Authority capital plan calls for a wide range of construction projects, including improvement in the areas bridges, tunnels and roadways. LaGuardia Airport's Central Terminal needs to be replaced. Stewart Airport needs to be expanded and modernized. These projects can only be undertaken if the Port Authority has the proper resources and funding. These proposed toll and fare increases are the only way to accomplish this.
What the Port Authority has proposed is a way to fund the massive construction, rebuilding and expansion our city and states need to maintain its status as the business, financial and cultural capital of the world. The members of Laborers' Local 79 look forward to working with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in building a bigger and better New York."
