Statement from Gila River Indian Community Gov. Gregory Mendoza On the March 25, 2014 Glendale City Council Vote
PHOENIX, March 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite four members of the Glendale City Council falling for the Tohono O'Odham's spin about the proposed Glendale casino and rushing through a vote in a matter of hours, HR 1410, a measure to prevent Las Vegas-style gambling near homes, small businesses, schools and places of worship, continues to have enormous support – as does the opposition to the Nation's neighborhood casino.
Gov. Jan Brewer; Attorney General Tom Horne; a bipartisan coalition of Arizona Congressional members; Indian tribes statewide and across the nation; Valley mayors, state legislators and thousands of neighbors – we all stand opposed to this facility and to the string of fictions its salesmen continue to use.
The Gila River Indian Community, joined by all this proposal's many opponents, will continue to do everything possible to keep Glendale and its sister cities across the Valley safe from casinos, including continuing to pursue HR 1410, which already passed the U.S. House in a voice vote landslide. We continue to urge the City of Glendale to treat every promise made by the Nation with a high degree of skepticism – and to continue the City's official opposition to the Tohono O'Odham neighborhood casino.
