EVELETH, Minn., Sept. 16, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that the union has endorsed U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan for re-election to continue fighting for working families in Minnesota's Eighth Congressional District.
USW District 11 Director Emil Ramirez credited Nolan for fighting to impose tariffs on unfairly and illegally traded foreign steel imports and supporting area union members during tense negotiations with U.S. Steel, ArcelorMittal and Cliffs Natural Resources.
"We are proud to endorse Rick Nolan because since taking office in 2013, he has been a relentless advocate for us workers and our families," Ramirez said. "He's standing with us in the fight to save our jobs from subsidized and dumped imports and stood with us through the past year of difficult contract negotiations during a time our industry was in crisis."
USW District 11 Assistant Director John Rebrovich said the Congressman has earned the union's support because his efforts helped save good jobs that could have vanished without his advocacy.
"His work on trade led to the recall of more than 1,000 Iron Range union members from layoff," Rebrovich said, "and a $65 million commitment by Cliffs to invest in upgrades that will bolster the viability and sustainability of family supporting, community sustaining mining jobs for the next generation of Steelworkers."
The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, the auto supply and energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and service occupations.
