Sue Helper Named U.S. Commerce Department Chief Economist
WASHINGTON, July 10, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced that Dr. Susan Helper will serve as the department's new Chief Economist, a post within Commerce's Economics and Statistics Administration. For the past year, Dr. Helper served as Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers.
"We are extremely fortunate to have Sue Helper join the U.S. Commerce Department's ranks as our new Chief Economist," said Under Secretary for Economic Affairs Mark Doms. "Given her strong background and expertise in economics, Sue is highly qualified for this important position, and we look forward to working with her on the range of critical economic issues facing our nation."
Dr. Helper is on leave from Case Western Reserve University, where she is the Frank Tracy Carlton Professor of Economics and was formerly the chair of the Economics Department. She has been a visiting scholar at University of Oxford, the University of California (Berkeley), Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her research focuses on the globalization of supply chains, and on how U.S. manufacturing might be revitalized. Dr. Helper received her PhD in Economics from Harvard and her B.A. from Oberlin College in Economics, Government and Spanish.
Dr. Helper lives with her husband and three bicycles in Washington, DC. She replaces Dr. Doms, who was Chief Economist from August 2009 until December 2012, when he was nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Commerce Department's Under Secretary for Economic Affairs.
