Sughrue Mion Sponsors Symposium At The University Of New Hampshire School Of Law To Help Global Companies Prepare For New Patent Laws
The Inaugural Robert Shaw International Intellectual Property Symposium at UNH Law Will Discuss How to Navigate Changes from the America Invents Act
WASHINGTON and CONCORD, N.H., Feb. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sughrue Mion, PLLC, a global intellectual property law firm with leading industry expertise on the recent changes to patent law, is sponsoring the University of New Hampshire School of Law's inaugural Robert Shaw International Intellectual Property Symposium on April 25 in Concord, NH. The event, held in UNH Law's Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property, will provide practical advice to help global companies protect their businesses and gain competitive advantages as the changes from the America Invents Act (AIA) continue to be implemented.
"We are proud to support UNH Law with this event. We know how complex patent issues can be for global companies, and how important it is to ensure a company's property rights," said William H. Mandir, Partner at Sughrue Mion and an alumnus of UNH Law. "Many of our attorneys have worked as examiners in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and have an insider's knowledge of practice before it – from administration to examination to appeal. In addition, more than 95% of our attorneys are licensed to practice before the USPTO, which will be even more important as more procedures move out of the courtroom and into the PTO with the changes brought about under AIA."
The event will feature keynote speaker Judge Arthur Gajarsa, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (ret.) and Distinguished Jurist-in-Residence at UNH Law. In addition, a plenary session and two panel discussions will feature Chief Judge James Donald Smith of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board; Bruce Kisliuk, deputy commissioner for patent administration at the U.S. Patent Office; Tadashige Itoh, president, Itoh International Patent Office, and many leading intellectual property attorneys and corporate counsels for some of the largest international corporations.
"UNH Law has earned a strong reputation as a global leader in pioneering legal education, particularly with intellectual property. We have one of the largest full-time IP faculties in the field, housed in our beautiful new Franklin Pierce Center for IP," said John Broderick, dean of the University of New Hampshire School of Law. "This event, with the generous support of Sughrue, is a wonderful way to honor the legacy of Robert Shaw by sharing his passion for the global practice of IP."
Speakers will discuss how the AIA will affect law from the perspectives of the U.S. judiciary and federal courts as well as those of other countries. Attendees will also hear from the intellectual property counsel at Siemens, Endo Pharmaceuticals, General Electric, and many more major international corporations, who will offer post-AIA implementation patent litigation strategies.
The symposium will be held at the new Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property in memory of the late Professor Robert Shaw. CLE accreditation is currently pending for Calif., N.H., N.Y., Va., N.J., and Pa. For those unable to attend the event in person, online streaming will be available.
