Summit Head of School Selected for Leadership Maryland Class of 2012
EDGEWATER, Md., Feb. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Summit School is pleased to announce that its Head of School, Dr. Joan A. Mele-McCarthy, has been selected to participate in Leadership Maryland, a statewide, senior-level leadership program. Dr. Mele-McCarthy is one of 50 men and women that were selected out of a large group of applicants from private, public, and non-profit sectors from across the state. The Class of 2012 represents Leadership Maryland's 20th anniversary class. The group will meet for the first time at a Get-Acquainted Reception to be held March 12 at the Maryland State House.
Leadership Maryland's eight-month program is designed to develop community leadership skills for the betterment of the state. Each year, participants learn through a series of hands-on workshops, seminars, and debates geared around the economic, social and environmental issues that affect the state of Maryland. Together alongside current leaders, the group works to develop and foster ingenuity to inspire thought, action and deed toward solutions to further the state's success. Since 1992 and with over 900 members, Leadership Maryland has promoted knowledge, interpersonal relationships and differing perspectives as the keys to developing the necessary leadership skills to grow the State of Maryland.

About Dr. Mele-McCarthy:
Joan A. Mele-McCarthy, D.A., CCC-SLP, serves as Head of School for The Summit School. She holds Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science and Doctor of Arts degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. She has been a college professor, clinician, consultant, and diagnostician.
In 2006, Dr. Mele-McCarthy earned the coveted Rolland J. Van Hattum Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation for her significant contribution to the field. She is an expert in the field of learning disabilities as well as speech and language.
