Supreme Court Ruling Upholds Key Provisions of the Affordable Care Act

NEW YORK, June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today's Supreme Court decision in National Independent Federation of Business, et al. v. Sebelius, upholds key provisions of the Affordable Care Act, including the critically important minimum coverage provision, which is a vital tool to protect and improve the lives of uninsured Americans and to reduce the severe inequalities of our current healthcare system.  The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is pleased that the Supreme Court has reaffirmed Congress's decision to require near-universal insurance coverage.

"Today's ruling upholds the landmark federal law designed to expand access to health insurance.  The Affordable Car Act paves a path to healthier and more productive lives for millions of Americans," said Debo P. Adegible, LDF's Acting President and Director-Counsel.

Uninsured Americans suffer significant personal and financial hardships that, collectively, have a profound impact on our nation. The minimum coverage provision will make health insurance more affordable to those who need it, including African Americans and other racial minorities who are more likely to be uninsured.

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) is America's legal counsel on issues of race.
