Survey Points to Challenges with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Consumption Cost Controls and Allocations

Dimensional Research Survey Highlights Importance of Tracking Cloud Usage and Spend

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cloud Cruiser, a leading provider of software solutions for hybrid cloud analytics, today announced the results of a Dimensional Research survey of IT professionals who attended the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Global Summit held in San Francisco and New York City in April and July, respectively.

According to the survey findings, 79 percent are pursuing a hybrid cloud strategy and one third will grow cloud services by more than 50 percent in the coming year. Lack of usage visibility and cost transparency are highlighted as key problem areas which have in turn created increased demand for new, flexible and easy to use solutions that drive efficiency, cost savings and a way to show business users exactly what services are being consumed.

Of the 79 percent deploying hybrid clouds, the majority of those running AWS already have other clouds today, including private and public clouds from other vendors. However, most of the respondents report frustration with the inability to control cloud consumption and allocate costs to the proper business users within their organization. The study also revealed:

  • 66 percent find it challenging to track cloud consumption for cost allocations
  • 30 percent or more will complement their AWS cloud with another cloud
  • Only 25 percent are able to align IT costs with consumption

"Survey results like this are always useful to highlight trends and adoption rates of cloud services," stated Deirdre Mahon, Chief Marketing Officer, Cloud Cruiser. "These findings tell us what we hear from our customers every day; budget tracking and forecasting is extremely difficult when you simply don't know who is using what service, at what capacity level much less the financial impact. Making investments in the right solutions is critical even during the early stages of cloud adoption. Measure from the beginning and it will pay dividends when your bill comes in month after month," added Mahon.

Cloud Cruiser recently announced the release of their new product offering that allows customers to easily track hybrid cloud usage by user and costs with built-in analytics. The new CloudSmart-Now™ packaged offering is a set of out-of-the-box, pre-configured templates with built-in workflow to collect detailed usage and cost data from AWS, Azure, Windows Azure Pack (WAP), VMware and Openstack. In one single application, businesses quickly receive accurate, real time reports that help identify IT waste, compare costs and forecast future demand.

Cloud Cruiser will be showcasing CloudSmart-Now at AWS re:Invent where the company will be exhibiting at booth #1241. For more information about Cloud Cruiser and hybrid cloud financial management strategies, follow Cloud Cruiser on Twitter at @CloudCruiserInc, or visit the company on LinkedIn.
