OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- On Tuesday, SVA Architects, Inc. was awarded a 2016 California Coalition for Adequate School Housing (C.A.S.H.)/American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC) Leroy F. Greene Design and Planning Award for MetWest High School (MWHS) and United Nation Child Development Center (UNCDC). The project was recognized with an Award of Honor in the New Built Project category at the annual awards luncheon as part of C.A.S.H.'s 37th Annual Conference on School Facilities. The awards program recognizes architectural excellence in the design of public school facilities.
MWHS and UNCDC were designed as Phase II of the La Escuelita Education Center in Oakland Unified School District. The grid-neutral, multi-school campus is the result of a collaboration between the District, the design team, and the community. This project functions as a District focal point, and offers a venue for school and community gatherings. The campus also acts as a learning tool to educate students and the community about sustainability. It is one of few CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools) Verified projects in California.
Robert Simons, AIA, President of SVA Architects states, "We'd like to thank C.A.S.H. and the AIACC for recognizing La Escuelita Education Center. The vision of this project is to be a part of the long-term goal to create a healthy, sustainable neighborhood."
Particularly noteworthy to the awards jurors were MWHS and UNCDC's high performance/sustainability, their programs to foster student success through experiential learning, and the project's venue serving parents and students as a connection to the reinvigorated surrounding community. Judging criteria included the project's planning process, learning environment, design, community environment, physical environment, and high performance/sustainability.
