Earlier this year, Husse was the first ever European business permitted by the USDA to export dog food to the United States. Six months later the Swedish franchise is selling its GMO free treats in three states. Frenchman Nicolas Merlino is one of the 'masters' who ran across the opportunity to tap into the Husse brand.
- "I moved from France to California in December 2014 and got started in January," says Mr. Merlino.
Less than a year later, he manages a network of eight franchisees, serving hundreds of California households with high quality GMO free dog food from Sweden.
This - starting from scratch - happens to be what the Husse culture is pretty much all about. Some twenty years ago, Swedish founder Tom Eliasson found himself completely wiped out by the financial crisis of the early 1990's. Eager to get back on his feet, he needed an idea that would get him started without a major investment. Producing great dog food and delivering it directly to the dog owner's doorstep, proved to be the perfect recipe. Today the Eliasson family oversees the largest pet food franchise in the world, with a growing family of more than 1,100 entrepreneurs.
For Mr Merlino, the journey started in Marseilles, where he lived next door to a dog owner who loved the carefree home deliveries of Husse dog food. Having learnt more about the franchise, Nicolas' dream of starting a business in the US suddenly aligned perfectly with Husse's ambition to take a swing at the world's biggest dog food market. Now the Frenchman is chasing an American dream.
- "My neighbor couldn't stop talking about the company, so I decided that I needed to try. Now my goal is to build a bigger business than the master in France," says Mr Merlino.
Husse delivers GMO-free dog food to dog owners in more than 45 countries. The business in each country or state is headed by a 'master', who in turn recruits a network of franchisees. This way, dog loving entrepreneurs can tap into a strong brand and an appreciated line of high quality products. In the US, Husse has employed masters in California, Arizona and Florida, with new states being added continuously.
