Synaptics Sponsored UIST Student Innovation Contest Winners Announced
Most Creative, Most Useful and People's Choice Awards Revealed for Synaptics ForcePad™ Driven Demonstrations
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Synaptics Inc. (NASDAQ: SYNA), a leading developer of human interface solutions, would like to congratulate the winners of the 2012 User Interface Software and Technology (UIST) Student Innovation Contest, including the Most Creative, Most Useful and People's Choice categories. The winners were selected from 27 registered teams that came from all over the world to take part in the contest. Synaptics was a Gold sponsor and hardware partner for this year's contest and supplied each team with a ForcePad, a multi-finger, pressure detecting, button-less TouchPad™ and were given six weeks to research and develop their design.
This year's Most Creative first place award went to Team Dosukoi (Kwansei Gakuin University) who created a Sumo wrestling game. The second place honor is shared by Team Chimerical (Carnegie Mellon University), creator of a cat petting game, and Team The Widget (Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), creator of a crane game using mechanical widget add-ons. Team PowerMice's (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) 3D sculpting project was selected for first place in the Most Useful demo using ForcePad technology. Second place went to Team Go Bananas (Massachusetts College of Art and Design) for their Braille reading device. The UIST Conference attendees voted Team Jedeye Masters (University of Manitoba) puppet ensemble as their favorite project and honored them with the People's Choice award. Team TteokPad (Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) came in second with their catapult game innovation.
"The contest was an amazing display of students ranging from high school to well-known universities driving the next wave of creativity and innovation," said Patrick Worfolk, Synaptics senior director of research. "Synaptics is thrilled to have had the opportunity to be the technology sponsor and we were impressed with the energy and effort the teams put forth creating their demos. Congratulations to all the winning and participating teams."
Synaptics ForcePad combines Image Sensing capacitive multi-touch technology with force sensing to add a third dimension to the traditional two dimensional TouchPad and ClickPad™ experience. ForcePad can detect the individual force applied by five fingers, at up to 500grams of force, with 5 bit resolution in 15 gram increments. This variable force data can be used to set activation thresholds to replace traditional left, right and middle tactile button activations.
Synaptics is currently working with key software partners to develop ForcePad driven applications to add an exciting new dimension to their user experience. Synaptics is ready to engage with PC OEMs to integrate this revolutionary new technology into their upcoming platforms, and anticipates notebook PCs with ForcePad technology will begin shipping in 2013.
