TAG Brazil expanding its business to U.S.
"Boutique" tax consulting firm opening new front to help foreign companies invest in Brazil
SAO PAULO, April 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- When he decided to open his own tax consulting firm in 2004, Marcelo Freitas was already one of Brazil's most experienced, well-known tax consultants. After more than 15 years in senior leadership positions at major national and multinational firms such as Bradesco, Arthur Andersen, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and Sumitomo Bank, the attorney, administrator and accountant from Sao Paulo saw that it was time to leave behind multinational structures and put his own accumulated know-how to work in a business that was more efficient, specialized and personalized.
Things turned out very well. Ten years later, his Tax Advisory Group Brazil - TAG Brazil – has revenues of 30 million per year and has its own multidisciplinary team of five senior partners with experience at the country's leading consulting, auditing and law firms.
As Freitas imagined, what drove TAG Brazil was its ability to cater to and deal with national idiosyncrasies, such as big companies set up as family businesses, and it did not favor clients that had already made a name for themselves over others. "For the first four years I worked without partners with my team of employees, but little by little, certain colleagues realized that this model offered the possibility of adapting to the specific characteristics of the biggest Brazilian and multinational clients, which gave rise to enormous growth potential," he relates.
Now at a time when, as Freitas did, many executives at multinational auditing firms that operate internationally are also opening up offices in the United States, TAG Brazil's goal is to set up an affiliate in the U.S. to promote commercial interaction with these professionals of similar background.
"In general, these new businesses specialize in auditing," Freitas explains. "So, as they expand their activities towards Latin America, we'll enter into partnerships to help them understand and work with local tax law." To this end, TAG Brazil's founder will have a team of five American professionals – a number that should double in a year – supervised by Freitas and one of his partners.
The plan is for this new front, along with Brazilian clients, to help maintain TAG's annual growth on the order of 35%. "We have a reduced structure that enables us to provide this service at a relatively low cost, as well as more effectively and carefully," Freitas notes.
