Tara brings 1500 tents to Nepal earthquake victims
LOS ANGELES, May 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Tara's Himalayan, a favorite westside restaurant known for its authentic Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine, is donating 50% of its proceeds through the month of May directly to earthquake victims in Nepal.
The restaurant's founder is Tara Gurung Black, a former Nepalese national dancer. What diners at Tara's Himalayan may not know is that Tara has for years quietly donated restaurant proceeds to build schools in an impoverished tiny mountain village, Armala, outside of Kathmandu, where Tara was born. Her foundation has made education a reality for children who otherwise would have had none. She is a local hero and is welcomed by a cheering crowd each time she visits Armala, which is several times a year.
With the recent tragic earthquake striking Nepal, Tara has increased her restaurant donations to 50%. So far, donations from her restaurant and LA's Nepalese community have purchased 1500 tents, 1000 blankets, medical supplies, water purification tablets and protein bars. Additionally, she's collected hundreds of pounds of clothes to hand out to families when she arrives next week in the hardest hit region of Kathmandu. On her subsequent visit to Nepal, she will return with a team of doctors and nurses.
If you love fresh, authentic Tibetan food with an Indian flare, come to Tara's and bring your friends. Try their specialties, such as the steamed momos or vegetable korma. The environment is easy-going, your tab will go to a worthy cause, and a modest hero named Tara will likely come to your table and greet you with her warm smile.
